Applying for Aid

Once you have applied to the School of Nursing at Platt College and have determined your eligibility for financial aid, you can begin applying for aid in 5 simple steps.

To be eligible for financial aid:

  • Apply for admission to Platt College
  • Create a Federal Student Aid ID
  • Complete a Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Platt College's Institutional FAFSA Code is 03014900.

Process

Step 1: Gather Materials

You will need records of income earned in the year prior to when you will start school. You may also need records of your parents' income information if you are a dependent student.

For the 2018-2019 school year you will need financial information from 2016. You may need to refer to:

  • Your Social Security card. It is important that you enter your Social Security Number correctly
  • Your driver's license (if any)
  • Your 2016 W-2 forms and other records of money earned
  • Your (and if married, your spouse's) 2016 Federal Income Tax Return.
  • IRS 1040, 1040A, 1040 EZ
  • Foreign Tax Return, or Tax Return for Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Marshall Islands, the Federal States of Micronesia, or Palau
  • Your Parents' 2016 Federal Income Tax Return (if you are a dependent student)
  • Your 2016 untaxed income records
  • Your current bank statements
  • Your current business and investment mortgage information, business and farm records, stock, bond and other investment records

To organize your information, you can print and complete a FAFSA on the Web Worksheet before you begin entering your information online. However, you are not required to do so. FAFSA on the Web will guide you through the questions that you must answer, and you can save your application and return to it later if you don't have the information you need to answer any of the questions.

Step 2: Create a FSA ID

Your FSA ID gives you a single username and password (that you choose) to sign the FAFSA and access various U.S. Department of Education websites. Students and parents need their own FSA IDs. You can create a new FSA ID in just a few minutes.

Follow these steps to create a new FSA ID:

  1. Click on the link to create a FSA ID from fsaid.ed.gov or other U.S. Department of Education websites, such as StudentLoans.gov, StudentAid.ed.gov, National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS), and TEACH Grant.
  2. Verify that you are at least 13 years old.
  3. Create a unique username and password, and provide your email address. When choosing a username and password, remember that the FSA ID is an electronic signature used to apply for financial aid and sign loan promissory notes and other legal documents.
  4. Provide all required personal data, such as your name, Social Security Number, date of birth, and contact information, as well as answers to the challenge questions you select.
  5. If you already have an FSA PIN, you can link it to your FSA ID. This can speed up the verification process. (If you have forgotten it or do not have a PIN, you don’t need a FSA PIN to create an FSA ID.)
  6. Carefully review your information. Read and accept the terms and conditions on the FSA ID site.
  7. Check the email account that was used to create your FSA ID. You can add [email protected] to your address book to make sure the emails get delivered to your inbox. Look for a message that contains a secure code you can use to verify your email address on the FSA ID site. You will then have the option of using this email address instead of your username to access the various U.S. Department of Education websites. If you change your email address, you will need re-verify it.

The FSA ID may be used to file a FAFSA immediately. There may be a delay of a few days before the FSA ID can be used to login to the other U.S. Department of Education websites.

Step 3: Fill it Out

For the quickest processing time, you'll want to complete the FAFSA online at FAFSA.ed.gov. The online application takes three to five days, on average, to process versus four to six weeks with the paper application.

When using the online application:

  • Enter the student and parent names exactly as shown on the Social Security cards. If the names don't match federal records, it could delay the processing of your FAFSA.
  • Use the "previous" and "next" buttons at the bottom of each page. Don't use your browser's "back" button or your information may not be saved.
  • Use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to automatically transfer your tax information to your FAFSA.
  • Use Platt College's FAFSA Number, 03014900, to complete your application.

Step 4: Sign & Submit

You're almost ready to submit your application, but first, print a copy of your answers from the Sign and Submit page and review for errors. If everything looks correct, enter your FSA ID, which serves as your electronic signature, and hit the "Submit" button. Review your confirmation page for information about the schools you've selected and a possible estimate of your financial aid eligibility.

Step 5: Complete Your File if Additional Documentation is Required

While processing your FAFSA, additional application requirements may be requested to complete your file in a process called verification. You will be notified via email if your file is incomplete.

Transfer Students

Students transferring to Platt College from other institutions can apply for financial aid. Transfer students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the appropriate academic year or have Platt College’s school code (03014900) added to a previously submitted FAFSA.
