Strategic Planning at Platt College

Strategic planning is an on-going process that results in long-range and far-reaching strategic directions for the future and short-term to complete plans and projects to advance the college goals for service to students and the community.  Sometimes referred to as an Institutional Assessment and Improvement Planning, Platt College develops a strategic annual action plan, referred to as the Systematic Evaluation Plan, that coincides with the calendar year.  The Systematic Evaluation Plan (SEP) is a systematic and comprehensive plan designed to identify the College’s strengths and areas for improvement. The SEP provides a structured, continuous assessment and evaluation of components that represents administrative capacity, faculty capacity, student outcomes, curriculum, and resources through the utilization of the ACEN Standards and Criteria as its organizing framework. Active College committees (with representation from faculty, staff, and students) lead analysis and evaluation of the SEP to ensure that all of the SEP requirements have been met.

There are two basic categories of the SEP - assessment and plan of action. The SEP assessment categories include: methods, frequency, initiated by, ELA’s (estimated levels of achievement) and documentation. The SEP plan of action categories include: findings, action(s), and implementation results. The review of each standard and criterion is assigned to the appropriate staff as designated in the initiated by category and then updated information is presented on a designated time schedule. This analysis of data and decisions made are reflected in the appropriate committee meetings. The components of the SEP that are regularly reviewed include mission and administrative capacity, faculty and staff, students, curriculum, resources, and outcomes. 

Strategic annual action plans directly tie into the College’s mission document.  Each summer, the Board of Directors reafiirms the mission document and core values of the College.  The Strategic Planning and Priorities Committee reviews the strategic plan, and selects actions that address strategic goals and objectives, before submitting a report to the Platt College President/CEO and Board of Directors. 

Planning Responsibilities

Planning is a participatory process that requires the involvement of our college constituencies.  Participants include the President, Vice President of Academic Affairs, the Dean of Nursing, Departmental Coordinators and Directors, faculty, staff, and students

The Platt College Board of Directors, employees, students, alumni, Program Advisory Committees members, and community members all play an important role in the overall strategic success of the College.  The President/CEO and Vice President of Academic Affairs provide central leadership for the planning process.  The President has approval authority for plans and reports submitted by the Strategic Planning and Priorities Committee. 

The Strategic Planning and Priorities Committee reports directly to the President/CEO.  The Committee coordinates the development and revision of the college vision, core values and mission document; recommends the five-year strategic plan and annual action plan to the President, and reviews the annual institutional effectiveness report. 

Program deans/directors develop and revise program mission statements, plans, and evaluations.  As part of the budget process, program directors are responsible for identifying and requesting budgetary funding needed to achieve action items identified in the annual plans. 

Faculty, staff, students and community members have the opportunity to participate in the planning process through college and community forums, communication with Strategic Planning and Priorities Committee members, and attendance at Strategic Planning and Priorities Subcommittee meetings. 

The responsibilities of the Strategic Planning and Priorities Committee:

  • Reviews and reaffirms the College’s mission and core values to establish that the statement is still relevant and appropriate.
  • Reviews components of the Systematic Evaluation Plan to consider the current planning, review previous year progress, and identify key issues that the College may face in the upcoming year. 
  • Helps in determining whether the current systematic evaluation plan’s goals, objectives and benchmarks should remain for the upcoming year.  The Strategic Planning and Priorities Committee can submit modifications and additions to the constituency representatives at Platt College.  The Strategic Planning and Priorities Committee identifies specific actions that the College should take to address strategic goals, objectives and benchmarks.

It identifies the College’s institutional priorities and helps in establishing benchmarks that helps Platt College measure success and identify need for improvement.
