Tips for Safety While on Campus

When walking or jogging:

  • Go with someone.
  • Stay away from isolated areas.
  • Try to stay near streetlights.
  • Hold your purse or briefcase tightly, close to your body
  • A front pocket is safer for a wallet than a back one.
  • Dress sensibly. Tight pants, clogs, or heels make movement difficult.

If you're being followed:

  • Cross the street or change directions.
  • Keep looking back so the person knows you can't be surprised.
  • Go to a well-lighted area.

Emergency Procedures: Bomb Threats

1. Bomb threat by mail: If you receive a bomb threat by mail, notify administration immediately.

2. Bomb threat by phone: Remain calm. Be courteous. Listen carefully; do not interrupt the caller. Quietly attract the attention of someone else to listen, if possible. Obtain as much information as possible. Record the following information:

Emergency Procedures: Fire

If you become aware of a fire or hear a fire alarm, the first priority is getting out safely. Once clear of the building and in a safe location, call 911 or 303-627-3130 from a cell phone to report the emergency.

Emergency Procedures: Earthquakes

An earthquake is a sudden, rapid shaking of the earth caused by the breaking and shifting of rock beneath the earth’s surface. Earthquakes strike suddenly, without warning, and they can occur at any time of the year, day or night. Forty-five states and territories in the United States are at moderate to very high risk of earthquakes, and they are located in every region of the country.

Emergency Procedures: Tornadoes

When a tornado warning has been issued, you may have very little time to prepare. How you respond now is critical.

If a tornado warning is issued for Arapahoe County, the President or his designee will issue a warning by telephone to take cover immediately.  All Platt College employees will help in making the announcement throughout the building.

Emergency Procedures

This section contains the recommended procedures to be observed during specific types of emergencies.  These procedures serve as a guide and should be used as such.  No guide can cover every conceivable situation and common sense should always prevail.  Platt College clearly outlines all exit points in the building, both on the first and second floors.

Emergency Plan

A.  Major Emergency Guidelines:

Major Emergency: Any incident that affects the entire building, which will disrupt the overall operation of the College.  In this case outside emergency services will be required, as well as major resource efforts from the Emergency Resource Team (comprised of the College President, Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dean of Nursing, Director of Financial Aid, Director of Financial Services, and Faculty Coordinator of Foundational Liberal Arts.  Call 911.

Introduction to Emergency Preparedness Plan

Platt College’s Emergency Preparedness Plan Procedures have been written to provide a basic manual for college personnel to follow and to help in planning for emergencies occurring on campus.  While it cannot provide a guide for every conceivable situation, it does provide guidelines that when followed will allow a crisis to be handled in an orderly fashion.  All requests for procedural change will be submitted to Platt College’s administrative team for review.  All changes recommended by the team will be made accessible to all college employees.

The Jeanne Clery Act

The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (20 USC § 1092(f)) is the landmark federal law, originally known as the Campus Security Act, that requires colleges and universities across the United States to disclose information about crime on and around their campuses. The law is tied to an institution's participation in federal student financial aid programs and it applies to most institutions of higher education both public and private.
